Ground-breaking Ceremony of Carnival’s Cruise Terminal F at Port Miami
On January 29th, 2021 we celebrated the Ground-breaking Ceremony of Carnival’s Cruise Terminal F in Miami. The project blends existing and new buildings, creating an integrated cruise terminal that provides a seamless traveler experience from curbside to ship. A key design strategy was to achieve a single passenger experience that is directional and that proceeds orderly through a sequence of well-thought-out spaces.
It is a cruise terminal for the 21st century ready to birth Carnival’s largest ships, the Excel class that will operate entirely on LNG, showcasing PortMiami and Carnival’s commitment to the future. The cruise terminal is scheduled to be completed in 2022 to coincide with Carnival’s 50th birthday celebration, maintaining PortMiami’s position as the top embarkation port for Carnival Cruise Line. Cruise Terminal F draws inspiration from maritime architecture, its prominent location fronting MacArthur Causeway and from Miami, a city that feels the pulse of the Caribbean.

Glow opens in Wynwood
Based on the promise to deliver super-food, super fro-yo, and a super good cause, g.l.o.w. is designed to be a social enterprise where 100% of its profits will benefit Global G.L.O.W. (Girls Leading Our World) – a non-profit incubator and accelerator that operates free after-school programs to mentor girls to advocate for themselves and make their communities stronger in 27 countries. The small store will definitely have a huge meaningful effect in the community!
“We created a natural, sunny and social sharing environment that celebrates the frozen yoghurt process and the story of Glow” said Claudia Busch, Founding Principal of BBA.
When Global G.L.O.W. founder and CEO Kylie Schuyler started the non-profit in 2012, she also set out to start a social enterprise to provide a steady source of funding to the non-profit. The business started with a simple, yet bold, idea: what if a for-profit concept could uplift people’s days with feel good, super-foods, while also doing good in the world? A GLOW Miami summit is on the works, where local girls, ages 10-18, will participate on an immersive day in their signature Her Story Campaign programming, working on identifying their strengths and how to use them to have a positive impact Miami.

Wynwood’s M-D-C Offices and Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce
We are excited to announce that the Groundbreaking Ceremony of the long-awaited Wynwood project took place on September 15th. The new center will be a much needed social hub for the Puerto Rican community, offering art and adult classes along with after school activities for children. The building will also accommodate offices on the upper floors for the County and District 5 Commissioner.
The building draws inspiration from the industrial nature of the neighborhood and the mostly one-story warehouses that defined the character of Wynwood years ago, along with the street art (murals) that have become a tourist destination.
In keeping with the neighborhood and to diminish the building mass, each level is treated differently breaking the uniformity of the facade along 29th Street. To further engage with the neighborhood, a painted mural by a Puerto Rican artist, wraps around the building and extends to the sidewalk and underside of upper floor slabs. The façade treatment of the upper floors is governed by the rhythmic repetition of vertical fins that recall industrial building architecture of the 20th century.

St. Christopher’s Montessori School Completion
September saw the opening of the new building addition to the school, featuring flexible classrooms and lab spaces, a library and administrative offices. The site, located in Key Biscayne, has a beautiful array of one to two story classroom buildings, a parish hall and a church nestled within the campus. The new addition was placed behind the existing church to minimize its visual impact from the main street and the surrounding low scale residential neighborhood. The architecture, while respectful and contextual, proposes a modern addition with steel structure, large cantilevers and hurricane proof resilient design.

Carnival’s First Cruise Terminal in Asia designed by BBA
Located in Japan’s port city of Sasebo, Uragashira Cruise Terminal will support the Japanese government’s plans to develop its ports, as well as the continually increasing number of cruise travelers in the region.
Nestled between Sasebo Bay and the mountains, the new cruise terminal will be part of the green landscape. BBA’s design is contextual, taking into account Sasebo’s culture, its building traditions, geography, and low-scale surrounding.
The one-story building will serve as a port-of-call for many cruise ships primarily traveling from mainland China to Japan. The terminal is expected to be operational by 2020, ahead of the Tokyo Olympic Games.

Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce Building approved by Design Review Board
The project entails the design of the new Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce and County Office Building in Wynwood. The Puerto Rican Community has a rich and long history in Miami centered in Wynwood, but until now it did not have a hub. Our project will provide a café, learning, art, meeting and office spaces for this purpose. In addition, the upper floors will be devoted to offices for the County.
The building draws its inspiration from the industrial nature of the neighborhood and the mostly one-story warehouses that define the character of Wynwood, along with street art (murals) that have become an intrinsically part of it.

BBA wins 2017 AIA Award
BBA won an AIA award for “Divine Detail” for it’s Cucuyo Project at the PAMM. Cucuyo, was designed for STARR Catering Group and is used as an outdoor bar at the Perez Art Museum Miami (PAMM). The work was made in collaboration with Amsterdam based MX3D. The bar was installed early September 2017. The official opening was on September 14th,2017.
The following is an excerpt of the AIA juror’s comments describing the project:
“This is the embodiment of Divine Details.Taking a relatively new technology and executing it at full scale provides great promise in 3-D printing. To integrate the means and methods in a sculptural way may redefine the concept of master builder for the 21st century. Highly thought out detailing of a potentially complex form. At first glance the simple form creates a clean manifold on which to house the café program. The fanning mesh of streel trusses is fascinating, more rich as the viewer approaches the surface, and a welcome demonstration of next generation fabrication.”

Two BBA projects short-listed for the International WAN Awards in Modern Methods of Construction (MMC)
World Architecture News announced that two of the latest BBA projects have been shortlisted it’s 2017 Awards. This is a major accomplishment as only 6 projects from around the world have been selected. The winner will be announced in February in conjuction with the awards ceremony event to take place at the London Marriot Hotel.
Jury comments:
Tenerife Cruise Terminal:
“The Tenerife Cruise Terminal is a great example of achieving a great effect with an economical means. The repurposed building coupled with a minimal intervention, and the use of wood and color to create a material juxtaposition, is a thoughtful approach for how typologies can be inherited and given new life.” Benedict Tranel
PAMM Cucuyo:
“PAMM Cucuyo is the only entry to have utilised 3D printing techniques to inform the design and industrial robotics to manufacture the double curvature grid shell components of the building. The resulting form and appearance is a unique and visually striking piece of sculpture that functions successfully as a café pod. A great demonstration of design technology being used to inform and develop integrated 3D modelling, robotics and manufacturing techniques.” Tim Partington
