FIU Campus Projects

FIU Campus ProjectsMiami, USA

FIU School of Architecture. Planned for a young and growing regional public university in a city that feels the pulse of the Caribbean and Latin America, the School of Architecture focuses on designing communal spaces to activate the student body and promote discussions and interactions beyond the classrooms and studios. Designed by Bernard Tschumi Architects, the award-winning project is organized around a central courtyard housing approximately 480 students and 70 faculty members. It includes undergrad and graduate studio spaces, offices, a lecture hall, a gallery, a rooftop terrace, small review rooms, computer labs, and flexible classrooms. Mr.Berenblum was the executive architect and principal of another firm. The project received the Miami AIA Award and was featured in several publications.

FIU Chapman Graduate School of Business. The forward-looking academic building is organized around two interlocking courtyards to foster interaction between students, faculty, and administrators while supporting the independence required by the educational programs. Classrooms are accessed through an open-air arcade that takes advantage of the sub-tropical climate. The 92,000-sf building includes a 300-seat auditorium, student support spaces, classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, an executive board room, a stock trading room, lockers, and administrative and faculty offices. KPF designed the project; Mr. Berenblum was the executive architect while he was the principal at another firm. The Graduate Business School received the Chicago Atheneum Museum of Architecture and Design American Architecture Award (2008) and the Construction Association of South Florida Craftmanship Award (2008)—a project characterized by its intelligent adaptive reuse that elevates the passenger experience.

FIU Ryder BuildingMiami, USA

The 30,000 sq. ft. Ryder Business undergraduate building underwent a comprehensive upgrade planned in phases by BBAmiami to modernize its appearance and key interior spaces. During the first phase, a new exterior color scheme was devised that established a dialogue with the adjacent graduate business building, reinforcing this quadrant of the campus. The lobby was completely renovated in the second phase, and a new media lab was planned, showcasing the school’s commitment to technology and immersive education. The third phase included ground-floor classroom renovations and future improvements extending to administrative offices, other classrooms, and support spaces.

Private School Expansion Planning

Private School Expansion PlanningCity of Pinecrest, Florida

Gulliver School expansion project envisions the transformation of the existing campus, focusing on creating a sense of community for students, administrators, and faculty. This is achieved by adding new buildings along the central pedestrian spine, embracing openness and integration. The planning fosters a stimulating and collaborative learning environment, emphasizing physical and visual connectivity through inviting thresholds, captivating gardens, and covered walkways. A new drop-off area, where most students arrive in the morning, is visually framed by the multi-story sports complex that projects a confident image with its progressive design. The students walk along a covered path surrounded by the new building, lush vegetation, gardens, and the classroom wing that opens towards it. Other programs included a parking garage building and slightly relocating the football field to maximize the potential for future bleachers and improved views.

St. Christopher’s Montessori School Expansion

St. Christopher’s Montessori School ExpansionVillage of Key Biscayne, Florida

St. Christopher’s Montessori expansion is a tribute to the school’s excellence in education that spans over 40 years in the vibrant Village of Key Biscayne. Berenblum Busch Architects designed a state-of-the-art three-story building addition, seamlessly integrating a new media center, classrooms, administrative offices, and a covered drop-off area. This thoughtful expansion addresses the school’s growth, creating a formal school entrance and drop-off that connects new and existing buildings on the campus. A media center/ library, visible on arrival, showcases student work and daily events at the school. The second floor provides versatile classrooms with movable partitions, while the third floor houses administrative offices. Completed in 2018, the addition offers a contemporary architectural interpretation of the original 1960s design that blends within the campus.

FIU School of Architecture

FIU School of ArchitectureMiami, USA

The School of Architecture building creates a sense of community by organizing each major program component in a separate building around a central courtyard that invites the engagement of students and faculty in spaces extending from the private to the public. The building answers how architecture should be taught in the new millennium. Open walkways overlooking the courtyard bind all the buildings together. Two colorful buildings (one used as a lecture hall and the other as a gallery) act as “generators”, infusing public events and life to the “mini-campus”.

FIU hired BBA’s creative team to freshen-up the MARC building exterior and lobby space of this key structure located at the main Campus. One of the proposed updates was to implement a new color scheme aligned with the latest University-wide branding strategy.
